Chalk Paint Chairs

I have been painting away this week! I just love how easy Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is to work with. I am nothing close to a professional but all of the pieces still look great because the product is just that awesome.

My Mom bought these two chairs at an estate sale a few weeks ago. This week they got two coats of French Linen and one coat of wash with Old White. The one on the right is just French Linen, the one on the left has been washed with Old White. I washed them both in Old White but thought I would take a picture of the difference before I finished. Love my little ballerina “helping” me take pictures on the right.

A little closer… It’s not a huge difference in the picture but it really is in person. The white wash really tones down the gray and I think it makes the chair look old. I love how it turned out. And would you believe that I used the sludge from soaking my paint brushes to wash it with??? Great tip from the Studio Eleven girls!

A close view from the top, you can see more of a difference in this picture. I bought fabric today to make cushions for the seats but I don’t love it now that I’ve got it home against the chairs. I need something in the gray family with a very faint stripe similar to ticking but with far fewer stripes and more of an old look.

This beauty is up next, my new night stand! This is the before. Since taking this picture I painted Duck Egg Blue on the detail and in a few spots on the drawers and then covered the entire piece with two coats of Old White. I’m thinking I’ll try a wash of French Linen and see how it turns out. I am really loving this look! I didn’t spray Shellac inside the piece and I really should have as it was clearly stained but never sealed in there and it turned pink through my Old White paint. Not exactly what I was going for but easily fixable with some more Shellac and paint.

And check out the headboard I scored on Craigslist yesterday morning! A guy in my neighborhood was listing this and I couldn’t pass it up. Solid wood from Pottery Barn for $50, yes please! You’ll have to ignore the fact that our guest room has never been touched and I’m still using a chair as a night stand since I stole them one from this room when I sold all of our bedroom furniture… It will get worked on one day!

Awesomeness! Eeeee!

Tea Collection: Back to School

I had a great opportunity to get some of the super cute items from Tea Collection’s new fall line and I just had to share. I rarely buy clothes for my girls since my sister totally rocks and passes down all of her daughter’s thing (lots of Tea, of course!) but I made an exception here. Tea Collection makes such nice quality things that you would never know that a dress has been handed down between several cousins (or more!). They hold up and still look new wash after wash. Not to mention they’re crazy cute, comfortable, and my girls love them.

Here is what I got for my girls:

Tea Collection Sanga 4 Piece Set

Tea Collection Butterfly Dot Dress

Tea Collection Mikko Floral Bubble Dress

The box came in the mail last week and the girls were practically ripping the dresses out of my hands as I pulled them out. One look at the butterflies and they were pulling their clothes off and putting the new dresses on. They crack me up these two, little fashionistas!

Here they are in the Tea Collection Floral Vine Dress. They dressed up to match their cousin Eva for dinner with a little dance party mixed in. So fun! They love their dresses and keep asking me if they can wear them again and again. Thanks Tea Collection!

Just in time for back to school shopping Tea Collection will give you 10% off of your first order if you sign up for their emails AND shipping is free on orders over $150.

Happy Shopping!

Chalk Paint Progress

I’m sure it won’t surprise you that I’ve been painting pretty much every chance I’ve had this week.

Last week I started out with the coffee table in our basement as my “practice” piece. It turned out fine but it really wasn’t the best choice to paint with any kind of paint. It has big open slots in the bottom where the side slats meet and I really should have caulked them. Honestly, I didn’t love this table as it was so I didn’t exactly care how it turned out. I just wanted to practice and I figured it couldn’t look any worse with a coat of paint on it. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint definitely makes everything look better, right? I’m planning to distress it a little more once I buy the right sand paper. The kind I have at home is way to rough and just sands straight down to the wood. I painted one coat of French Linen and then two coats of Old White and planned to distress to reveal bits of French Linen. (Pardon the poor lighting in the basement. And the books on top, just keepin’ it real!)

I am absolutely in LOVE with this chair. I moved it into our bedroom and I just can’t stand how happy it makes me. Eeeee!

The detail on top turned out really well. I may end up distressing the seat and legs a little more. Love! (Can you tell I started trying out new paint colors in the kitchen…)

I bought this little bench at an estate sale on Monday with my Mom for $10 (or it could have been $8, I don’t remember). It had an ugly purple velvet cushion on top but it was easily removable.

Here’s how it looks with one quick coat of Duck Egg Blue. LOVE! Also going in our bedroom…

I’m going to recover the cushion with one of these fabrics. I’m still having trouble deciding. I may go with the burlap and put a stencil on the top in gray or black. Maybe something document looking?

Here it is after one coat of clear wax. Let me tell you, it was WAY easier to wax than my chair if you can only imagine… Note the mirror that it’s sitting on, painted in Old White. I stink and forgot to take a before picture. Just imagine really dark wood, just like the little bench.

I love the detail in the top but I need to get a smaller brush to get in the spaces up there. As you can see I missed quite a few!

The mirror needs a coat of wax after some touch up in the top detail portion and then she’s going up in our bathroom over the bath tub. Can’t wait!

Hope you’re having a fun week so far!

Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond Milk Giveaway!

As a Mom Ambassador for Moms Meet I get to sample all sorts of new things, super fun right? Even more fun, I get to tell you what I think about them AND I get to give them away! Awesome, right? I think so!

This month they sent me Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond Milk. Almond Breeze is a shelf stable nondairy milk alternative that is calcium-enriched and free of dairy, lactose, gluten, and soy. I got to sample the Vanilla and the new Coconut Blend. I had never had almond milk before so I was excited to try it. We really liked the vanilla in our cereal and it was also good in my coffee as well. I made my protein smoothie with both the coconut and the vanilla and it was delicious each way!

Protein Smoothie
1.5 cups frozen fruit
1 frozen banana
1 cup fresh spinach leaves
1 scoop protein powder
6oz water
6oz almond milk

I made the kids smoothies (minus the protein powder) and they loved it too! Although, they weren’t quite as keen on drinking it in place of their regular milk. I can see the Coconut Blend working well in recipes such as cakes, muffins or others with a coconut flavor.

I get to giveaway a carton of Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond Milk to 3 of my readers! To enter the giveaway you can check out Blue Diamond Almond Breeze and leave a comment below telling me which flavor you are most excited to try.

My Newest Obsession – Annie Sloan Chalk Paint!

I realize I’ve been MIA for a few weeks. You can blame it on Studio Eleven and their Annie Sloan Chalk Paint class at The Covesville Store. I took their class, Annie’s Way (SO FUN, thanks Elisa and Sarah!!), and I’m pretty sure I’ve had Chalk Paint on at least one body part and/or in my hair ever since. No worries, I got plenty on my furniture as well!

I’ve been collecting pieces to fix up and paint at yard sales and off of Craigslist. Basically, anything beautiful and cheap that was available in this town is now living in our basement. Andy told me on Friday that I really had to stop, ha!

I bought this chair off of a lady on Craigslist, gorgeous isn’t it? I’m planning on painting it and trying my hand at reupholstery.

This one I bought at a yard sale and it’s next on the list to get an update. It has beautiful detail in the top and it’s a great first try at reupholstery project. It’s super simple. I’m thinking Old White and maybe a burlap seat or something similar? I have a few beautiful pieces of fabric in mind.

This one came from the same yard sale. The lady said it was a sewing chair and there is a little storage area under the seat. It should be pretty simple to recover as well.

I love this table, it came from that same yard sale. I wish red went with my house because I love the way it’s already painted. Gorgeous!

My Mom picked up these chairs at an auction for me on Friday. She rocks! Aren’t they cute? I’m going to make little cushions for them and of course, paint them with Chalk Paint!

I bought this dresser off of Craigslist and was hoping to use it as a night stand. It ended up being a little taller than I expected but I still really like it. I’m thinking a fun bright color with a good bit of distressing?

This dresser also came off of Craigslist and I’m not sure if I’m going to paint it or not. It ended up not being solid wood but for only $7 (yes, $7!) I couldn’t pass it up. It has gorgeous lines and I think it will make a great piece to practice on. I just wonder about distressing it. I’ll have to be really careful not to go too far down.

My Mom had this chair sitting in her office the other day when I went over the pick up the other two she got at the auction. It is the PERFECT chair to paint in old while with that detail on the top. Head on over to my Facebook page to check it out painted!

As you can see from the above picture, I have been painting all of this in my kitchen. I can’t tell you how happy that makes me. The paint is very low VOC and has absolutely no smell. We even had a dance party the other morning while painting the coffee table from the basement. I’ll post a picture of that when I can remember to take a picture. Obviously it takes a little longer to paint a piece when you have kids running circles around you but it’s still awesome to have the option.

I’ve pretty much been painting anything I can get my hands on: chairs, coffee tables, frames, clocks…. It’s SO fun!

Butterfly Spaghetti

I made this for dinner the other night and the kids loved it so I thought I’d share the recipe. I had originally planned to make regular spaghetti (as requested by Maddie) but had to change the plan once I realized our hamburger didn’t survive the partial thaw and re-freeze brought on by the week without power. The kids were pumped when I presented them with “Butterfly Spaghetti” so all was good at our dinner table.

Butterfly Spaghetti

Mini bowtie (or “butterfly”) pasta, cooked
Zucchini, shredded
Spaghetti sauce (whatever your family likes, we used Prego Veggie Smart)
Mozzarella cheese
Parmesan cheese

Mix all of the ingredients into a microwave safe dish. Microwave until all is warm and cheese is melted. Serve with bread!

It literally took 5 minutes to make this dish since I had all of this leftover in the fridge. If you didn’t already have cooked pasta in the fridge it might take 7 minutes (ooh, I know right?) but then you wouldn’t need to microwave it like I did.  My kids devoured this as quickly as their little hands could shovel! This made me happy, which they immediately noticed and then begged me for dessert.

They freaked out when I gave them vanilla ice cream with pink sprinkles and a few pink m&m’s. (Pardon the blurry iPhone pictures)

Mom has camera out, must provide obligatory “cheese” face while yelling “cheese!”

Two happy girls!

Ellorie’s Room

When Ellorie was born we were in the middle of adding onto our house. Our life was a total mess. She and I slept in the basement for a few months and she didn’t even get an actual room until our new one was finished and she could have our old one. It remained unpainted with a giant drywall patch for wall decor for months. We then fixed it up for Maddie and plopped her into Maddie’s old, already decorated room. Basically, she’s the second child and she got the hand-me-down bubblegum pink room. Good thing she was a girl! It was the best I could do at the time and it worked out just fine for 18 months. Lately, though, I’ve been itching to get rid of the pink and redecorate the room just for her.

I spent pretty much my entire day yesterday painting Ellorie’s room. Goodbye bubblegum pink and hello butter!

The paint is Benjamin Moore “Butter” and I’m loving it SO much more than the bubblegum pink. I ran out of paint last night about 3/4 of the way through rolling my second coat. I had hoped to get more this morning so I could finish rolling during nap time but that didn’t quite work out as planned.

I moved her yellow and tan glider down to the basement and one of the white Ikea Ektorp chairs out of our room into it’s place. You can kind of see in the background of the above picture. I think it will work really nicely for her age since we really don’t need the glider up there anymore. It’s super comfy and will give her more room to play without an ottoman. Plus, it’s cushy and white and I think it works really well with the yellow paint.

I have a pink crib sheet (that I got for free when I bought Maddie’s toddler bed off of Craigslist) from the Pottery Barn Kids Eliza collection:

I would love to find more of this bedding but I haven’t had much luck, especially in toddler/crib size. I will need a pillowcase and I’d like a toddler size quilt but the pillowcase is more important for now.

I have this PBK Light Pink Gingham Drape Shade (although ours seems lighter pink than this picture). I plan to buy a plain white roller shade from Lowe’s to put underneath to darken her room:

I bought this butterfly mobile off of Craigslist a few months ago and she’s already in love with it (so am I!):

I have lots of white frames and accessories that I can use to decorate her walls. I plan to paint some pink and leave some white and bring in some silver as well. I also plan to include other pink accessories, maybe some books with pretty binding, sculptures, etc. I also have her name in the lower case PBK letters. That might be cute on a pink shelf?

Her carpet is an ugly brown and it’s not in the budget to be replaced or updated anytime soon so I’d like to brighten it up a little. I’m debating on buying this rug but at $200+ I would love to find a very similar but cheaper alternative:

Her room needs more light and I was thinking of either doing a tall floor lamp behind the white chair or hanging white globe lights above it but only if I can hide the cords somehow. She’s a little mischievous and accident prone so I’m not trying to give her any fresh ideas.

I’m planning to make this butterfly out of buttons (I’m thinking sequins might work better than buttons just because they are flatter?):

I’m planning on having Andy make shelves like these at Mrs. 5C’s House

I love the idea of the books facing forward so you can see them all and they double as wall decor! I think I might put some other decor items up on the top shelves but we’ll see what I come up with.

I can’t wait to have the painting done so I can at least move her back into her room. I’m sure she’d like that as well, although she’s been doing really well sleeping in the basement. Maybe she’s remembering the good ol’ days of her infanthood, ha!

Hope you’re having a good and productive week too!

Happy 4th and Happy to be Home!

We have had quite the adventurous week! With no power, we spent a few nights at home sleeping in the basement, a night a Mimi’s house, a night at Aunt Sarah & Uncle Rob’s house, and another night at Mimi’s house. Now we’re finally home and so happy to be here!

The kids had a blast at Mimi’s house. They spent lots of time playing with baby dolls and chasing the poor dog around. There were “naps” on the floor in the kitchen and lots of flowers picked. We had fabulous pork tenderloin. We were all spoiled rotten!

We had a great visit with Aunt Sarah and Uncle Rob and apparently I was so enamored with the sweet baby that I didn’t take one single picture. Can you believe that???? I can, she was pretty fabulous! The girls both did really well with the baby and I was really surprised that neither was particularly jealous. They loved her! But really, what’s not to love? I’m sure it won’t surprise you that we had them all (including Katherine) in matching purple polka dot dresses!

We had a fun (and adventurous) 4th of July as well. We had planned to go to Sakura with friends and then take the big kids to the fireworks. We got to Sakura to find it closed for the holiday (bummer!). So we braved Bonefish with 3 kids under 4. We ordered big glasses of wine and beer to prepare. We had some screaming and whining, several potty breaks (I believe my child screamed “I need to poop” for all to hear), and some minor spillage of drinks but all in all it was fine. The kids weren’t nearly as bad as our server but that’s another story!

We had a short wait for our table so we kept the kids entertained outside for as long as possible. We practiced ballet moves, Maddie instructed.

We exchanged kisses.

I love the look on his face! They each tried to play it so cool but we know they loved it!

We played the “drums” on the bench while giggling hysterically.

And of course you know Maddie had to shake her booty! Dance party!

We jumped up and down on the grate while looking at ourselves in the reflection of a parked car. Our little ones are so vain 😉

Ellorie thought it was a good time to practice her forward rolls. Sometimes I wonder about her…

And we snuggled on the bench! He’s a lady’s man I tell ya! I know both of my girls are smitten 🙂

We scrapped the fireworks idea when we found out it started at 9:30 pm and we decided to get ice cream instead. The kids were so tired but that didn’t stop the gummy bear and m&m eating. Not much holds them back! They ran laps (no lie) afterwards and we all went home and crashed in bed.

Maybe we’ll be able to stay up for the fireworks next year 🙂

Holy Storm!

I’m sure you’ve heard, we had a CRAZY storm here on Friday night! Andy and I were watching a DVD we rented and we could hear a loud noise coming from outside. We got up to check it out and the power went out. We could hear what sounded like a freight train and then the house started shaking. We looked at each other like “Oh, shit!” and ran up the stairs. We grabbed the kids and the dogs and ran to the basement. They’re saying on the news that there was no tornado that it was just a strong storm but I know we must have had something very similar, maybe a microburst? Whatever it was it was enough to freak us out and freak out the kids and we all spent the night in the basement up against the concrete wall.

Not my best photo, pardon the iPhone with no light. We’ve been without power ever since. That means NO AC! We’ve been sleeping in the basement on Maddie’s old mattress with portable fans (like these). It’s actually pretty cool in our basement and we’ve been comfortable enough to sleep all night. There is no TV or hanging out with the hubs while the kids sleep but really, sleeping all night is pretty good right?

We are very fortunate that Andy’s brother and parents live right nearby and both have generators and fridge/freezer space to spare. We took all of our food and moved it between their two houses. We ate pretty much everything else. So far we haven’t really lost much food and we’re so so grateful for that.

We’ve spent a lot of time at the pool trying to keep as cool as possible. We’ve had some fun play dates with friends, thankfully indoors. My kids have had lunch at Starbucks pretty much every day. My Mom got power back today so the kids and I are lucky to be spending the night with her and my StepDad. She cooked us a great dinner and he poured me a glass of wine as soon as I walked out of the kids’ rooms. The kids are both asleep upstairs and I’m actually on the computer instead of in the bed with Maddie for the first time in days. I’m happy!

We’re hanging in there! I hear we’re supposed to be getting power back tomorrow but I’m not believing it until I see it. They teased us with a promise of it tonight but that clearly didn’t happen. Andy was really pissed when he heard that his Dad saw the Dominion workers in our neighborhood on the way home and they told him we would have power tonight if Dominion would allow them to work longer than 4:30 pm. But they won’t so their plan was to hang out in the parking lot until it was time to go back to their hotel. So much for “working ’round the clock” to bring power back to our families! GRR.
